Snapshot of SA SRC Achievements in 2024
At the start of this year, a 150 passionate secondary school students were selected to be part of this year’s 2024 South Australian Student Representative Council (SA SRC). In addition to maintaining momentum on the 2023 campaigns Fitness for Free and Free Fares for Our Future, the 2024 SA SRC built three new campaigns: Our Future Our Vote, Greening Our Canteens, and Seeing Ourselves. Each campaign has been designed by young people themselves and focuses on a key issue identified by SA SRC members with the intent to create positive change across their communities.
To ensure the voices of South Australian young people have been well represented, the SA SRC launched a poll for each campaign focus. These polls asked students about their thoughts and experiences in relation to fitness and wellbeing, environmental programs at schools, diversity and inclusion, voting and civic participation, and public transport. The polls generated over 4,400 responses and helped to shape the content and approach taken with the campaigns.
Following the polls, SA SRC members launched petitions for each of the five campaigns to the South Australian parliament. A combined total over 2900 signatures was received for the petitions, with a goal of a combined 4600 signatures across all five petitions.
SA SRC reps also met with Members of Parliament to discuss their individual campaigns and the express why they feel these issues are so important to young South Australians. Additionally, members of Greening Our Canteens and Our Future Our Vote contributed to policy submissions made to Parliament with Campaign Position Briefs produced for each.
The 2024 SA SRC campaigns have also featured in media across the state with a number of students interviewed on metro and regional radio stations and featured in newspaper articles that have helped to highlight the issues being raised by young SA SRC changemakers.
