Menstrual Mural in the City

Project Background:

South Australia’s Commissioner for Children and Young People, Helen Connolly, advocates on behalf of children and young people to end period poverty by improving access to period products, establishing access to clean toilets with sanitary bins, providing high-quality information and education about menstruation, and reducing the stigma and taboo around periods.

The Commissioner’s report titled Menstruation Matters, released in March 2021, addresses the impact of menstruation on student wellbeing, school participation and attendance, and the impact periods have on the capacity of young people to be involved in educational, sporting, recreational and social activities.


Calling Artists:

The Commissioner is calling on artists (individuals or groups) for expressions of interest in designing and installing a Menstrual Mural on a wall in central Adelaide by the end of 2022.  Artists are invited to create a public artwork that will raise awareness of menstruation and help to normalise periods. The design should seek to destigmatise periods and menstruation in a way that will appeal to children and young people.


Funding:

Funding of up to $8,000 (inclusive of GST) is available for the design and installation of the mural/decals, including cost of all materials.


Selection process:

Short-listed artists, chosen through the EOI process, will be paid $500 GST excl. to prepare and present their concept designs.
The designs will be reviewed by the Commissioner, local stakeholders, and Uniting Communities (the site owners).
