Period Justice Roundtable on Channel 44

On Wednesday 4 December, members of the CCYP’s Period Justice Working Group participated in a Couch 44 Roundtable discussion for Community TV Channel 44. The Rountable centred around the work of the group to raise awareness around period justice and the young SA changemakers who are passionate about this issue. Three members of the Working Group – Taylah, Val and Ephrasiewere joined by Jasmine Wrangles from CCYP and Alina Jansons, Presenter/Asssociate Producer of Couch 44 who led the conversation.

The Rountable discussion covered a range of topics on period justice and what it involves, including the importance of providing free period products in community venues such as schools, shopping centres, community venues, sports, clubs etc; period pain management including recognising when pain is actually endometriosis, provision of easy access to facilities and greater awareness of educators, sporting coaches and others across the community in relation to periods and menstruation more broadly. The conversation included the need to start education around periods and menstruation in primary school, and the need to ensure it is delivered with a gender diversity lens and not just targeted at those who menstruate. It also included the need to ensure that when referring to periods and menstruation we use language that normalises and destigmatises such as ‘hygiene’ and ‘sanitary’ which infers that periods are unhygienic and that people who are menstruating are ‘unclean’. By normalising conversations about periods and menstruation we will be helping to remove the stigma and taboo that currently surrounds this normal bodily function. Periods are Everybody’s Business!

Couch 44 Roundtable Presenter and Associate Producer, Alina Jansons, had this to say about the Roundtable Guests:

“It was an honour to interview Taylah, Valeria, Ephrasie, and Jasmine from the CCYP’s Period Justice Working Group last week.
Not only did I personally learn so much from them, the entire crew working behind the scenes were blown away by their knowledge, professionalism, and dedication to tackling period poverty in South Australia. Their research and insights into menstruation related issues created an amazing interview that we cannot wait to share with the world in 2025. We hope that by airing this interview on Couch 44, we can educate our audience and help the CCYP’s mission of breaking some of the stigma behind period talk.
On behalf of the Couch 44 production team and crew, we would like to thank these amazing members for being part of our show and for continuing to do good in our community.”

The Couch 44 Roundtable episode is expected to go to air in March/April 2025. Watch this space for more details as they become available.
